VNA's therapists earn blue ribbon from Barb

Barb, a retired DPS teacher and an active, independent equestrian and dog trainer who’s ever on-the-go, fractured her tibia just below the knee while working with her horse. Unaccustomed to a full-length leg brace and walker, Barb was delighted when Deb, a VNA occupational therapist, came to visit.

“Deb was so competent. She helped me learn what I could do versus telling me what I couldn’t do,” said Barb. “I learned simple and complex things, like taking a shower by myself and using my walker with more confidence. That's huge!”
Meanwhile, Henry, VNA physical therapist, helped Barb with strength-building exercises, encouraging her while challenging her to progress. Barb smiles. “He was exactly what I needed, a kind but diligent drill sergeant!”
Thanks to Deb and Henry, Barb has transferred off her cane, has returned to substitute teaching and again is working with her horses and dogs. She’s looking forward to the rest of the year.
“The VNA team was so accommodating, and the caregivers were incredibly encouraging,” said Barb. “I am very happy with Visiting Nurse Association.”

VNA ultimate professional lauded
                                          (from a letter to VNA)
“Jim and I can’t say enough about the high quality of care provided by his nurse Robin from Visiting Nurse Association. Robin cared for Jim before his liver transplant and after it. She was consistently firm with him when needed and super compassionate during his sickest times.
"Robin has been the ultimate professional, sharing her knowledge, teaching me how to care for my husband and recommending hospitalization or calling the doctor when necessary. Her judgment has been faultless and objective. She has always been thoroughly informed of what the doctor wants when she arrives.

"Thank God for nurses like Robin. I know my husband Jim wouldn’t be alive today without her care and guidance."

Sincerely, DJ

Patient credits OT for life-saving guidance
Knee replacements come with unfamiliar pains. So when LC of NE Colorado came home from the hospital not feeling well last November, she wasn’t too concerned. Yet when a Visiting Nurse Association occupational therapist vistied her the next day, she was happy to see her.
"Chaylene was very helpful,” said LC. “She went through the rooms of my home to make sure there was nothing that would cause me difficulty during my recovery.

“Chaylene also was keeping an eye on me. She noticed I wasn’t feeling well and ended her assessment with a strong recommendation that I go to the emergency room. I know she was concerned.

“My husband drove me to the hospital right away. It didn’t take the ER team long to readmit me – for five more days! – after finding a blood clot in my abdomen.

“I am truly thankful for the professionalism of the Visiting Nurse Association’s team. Although Chaylene isn’t a nurse, she recognized the signs that something was wrong. We are very pleased with her attention to me and the services she provided.

“VNA’s physical therapist also was fantastic. After my second hospital stay, I was so behind on my therapy. But Shelene got me going again. I was very impressed, and I’m doing great now. Little by little, I'm climbing stairs again!”
