Feet First: Promoting Overall Health with Foot Care

Feet can be an indicator of your overall health. Regular medical foot care can spot early signs of serious conditions including heart disease, diabetes, nerve and circulatory disorders. Our providers can help you avoid falls and stay mobile, too!

Preventative Foot Care

Foot care provided by Colorado Visiting Nurse Association allows patients to receive preventative care and discuss their health with a medical professional. Our nurses build relationships with our foot care patients. These repeat visits let us look at health changes over time, and we can provide referrals for physicians or support systems.

Self-Care Tips for Your Feet

  • Examine feet daily. Look for blisters, cuts, and ingrown toenails.
  • Put your feet up when sitting down to promote circulation in your feet.
  • Stand up and move around if you are sitting for long periods of time.
  • Protect your feet from heat and cold.
  • Keep feet clean and dry.
  • Wash your feet every day. Do not soak your feet unless prescribed by your provider.
  • Trim toenails with clippers regularly. Trim nails straight across, smooth corners with an emery board or nail file.

Colorado Visiting Nurse Association Foot Care Options

At Home

This service is available to Kaiser Permanente Medicare members only and is performed by a Medical Foot Nurse.

In order to qualify, patients must:

  • Be homebound
  • Have a physician referral for home foot care
At a Foot Care Clinic

Colorado Visiting Nurse Association holds 50 + foot care clinics per month at more than 60 locations throughout the Front Range including Denver, Brighton, and Boulder. No physician referral is needed. Appointments are required.

What Does a Foot Exam Include?

  • Medication review
  • Foot exam, including inspection for any discoloration, swelling, redness, warmth, cuts, scrapes, corns, calluses, or other changes of the foot, ankle, and leg below the knee
  • Screening for neuropathy (nerve damage)
  • Monitoring blood pressure
  • Checking your circulation by taking your “pedal”, or foot pulse
  • Assessing and monitoring chronic diseases including hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis
  • Individual health coaching and education
Host a Medical Foot Care Clinic at Your Location
